Brown spots & sun damage

Tired of connecting the dots on your face? Brown spots on the skin, sometimes called liver or age spots, are usually caused by sun damage and aging. They are hyperpigmentation from too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays, or to UV rays in tanning beds.

Not every brown spot on the body is simply an age spot. An experienced dermatologist needs to make sure your spots are harmless and not worrisome, and a detailed skin analysis can help identify the type and number of spots.

What causes brown spots?

Chronic exposure to the sun, even with sunblock, exposes the skin to ultraviolet light type C waves and infrared radiation. This results in dark or brown spots on the face, hands, feet, legs and body. Brown spots appear most often on the face, chest, arms and shoulders because these areas get a great deal of direct sunlight.

Apart from sun damage, some people develop brown blemishes called melasma. Also known as the “mask of pregnancy”, this hyperpigmentation is more common in pregnant women and in patients with darker skin tones. Sun exposure can aggravate melasma, and without treatment it often darkens or covers larger areas of the face.

Prevent, treat, maintain

Our prevent, treat, maintain approach is crucial to managing these bothersome discolourations. At Rao Dermatology, we review your irregular spots and recommend a comprehensive program customized to your needs.

  1. Prevent Using vitamin C serums together with sunblock is mandatory.
  2. Treat Our very effective Halo laser can remove brown spots. Red spots, which can be spider angiomas or cherry spots, can easily be removed with Excel V laser or BBL.
  3. Maintain Maintenance is the final and most important step, achieved with an advanced skin care regimen and regular visits.

The Halo laser

Over time, sun damage and the body’s natural aging process can leave your skin with sun spots and fine lines and take away its natural, healthy glow. Our Halo laser, one of our laser treatments, helps restore that youthful glow.

Halo is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser, combining two lasers in one to take years of damage off the face. It is the most scientifically advanced treatment for sun damage, pigment, fine lines, texture and pores, without the downtime of traditional ablative and fractional lasers. As a total skin rejuvenation treatment, Halo brings dramatic changes in overall tone, texture, discolouration, skin reflectivity, lines, pore size and glow.

Maintaining your results

Medical facials

Medical facials are a great way to maintain your skin and further combat the signs of aging. They are an affordable, milder form of treatment that can still make a difference when done routinely. They help preserve the skin after laser treatments and are an option for anyone who wants a more gradual, low-risk treatment program.

Daily advanced skin care

At Rao Dermatology, we believe a proper skin care regimen is essential for healthy, youthful skin. Our comprehensive, tailored daily skin care program will help bring back your skin’s natural, healthy glow.
