Aging skin

As we age, we start to notice sagging, looser skin and a tired, dull, sallow complexion. Then we zoom in closer and obsess over the fine lines, deeper wrinkles and brown and red spots.

These signs start to become visible in our 20s and are more noticeable as we move into our 30s, 40s and beyond.

Our skin care solutions for aging skin have a few goals: removing damaged layers of skin, rejuvenating skin, and nourishing skin to prevent future damage. These treatments can be combined or used separately, depending on each case and the results you want.

What causes skin to age

Many changes occur in the skin as it ages. While aging is a natural process, a lifetime of bad skin care habits or health issues can speed it up or lead to unwanted changes. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors cause our skin to age, including:

Genes, sun and everyday habits

  • Genetics. If your mother looked older than she was, chances are you will too.
  • Sunlight. The sun’s powerful rays can cause wrinkles and a leathery appearance and texture.
  • Lifestyle. Unhealthy habits such as smoking, poor diet, stress and substance abuse can all contribute to aging skin.
  • Facial expressions. Repeated facial movements can etch permanent lines and wrinkles into the skin over time.

Natural changes with age

  • Loss of fat, muscle and bone. The natural loss of these during aging can reduce facial volume and change the shape of the face.
  • Less collagen and hyaluronic acid. These two compounds give the skin structure and volume, and the body produces less of them over time.
  • Changes in hormones. These can lead to unwanted hair growing where it shouldn’t.
  • Dilating blood vessels. Weakened, dilated vessels can cause facial redness, which can be sensitive and difficult to treat.

The distressing news is that we can never stop our skin from aging: it starts in our 20s and is ongoing. The good news is that we can certainly slow it down.

How we treat aging skin

We understand that every condition is different, and we offer many skin rejuvenation options for all of your cosmetic needs. A long-term, comprehensive skin care program is paramount to optimizing your skin’s health and structure: preventing damage and protecting healthy skin, treating imperfections, and maintaining the results. Our aging skin treatments include:

Laser treatments

Our range of effective laser treatments includes IPL, Nano Laser Peel and Laser Genesis. They help correct the conditions typically associated with early skin damage and aging, stimulating the body to generate new collagen, which strengthens the skin and reduces unwanted redness and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers

We offer a variety of facial fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, Revanesse and Radiesse. Our injectors are trained by Dr. Rao and aim for a natural, soft lift and fullness that refreshes your look.

Neuromodulators

Our neuromodulator treatments use botulinum toxin type A, which is injected into the muscles. It reduces the repeated muscle contractions from years of frowning and squinting.

ThermiRF

Our range of ThermiRF treatments delivers radiofrequency heat to address a variety of cosmetic concerns, including aging skin, without any social downtime.

Other aging skin treatments we offer

Hands age faster than the face

Our hands are the most used part of our body, but sometimes even they need a helping hand. Hands are vulnerable to the first signs of aging, and they can age even faster than the face.

This is because there is minimal fat on the backs of the hands. So even when a small amount of collagen begins to break down, whether from aging or sun exposure, the damage shows clearly on our hands.

The result is wrinkly, crepe-like skin with noticeable veins and tendons, and increased pigmentation in the form of irregular spots makes the hands look even older. At Rao Dermatology, we have great hand rejuvenation techniques that will restore their natural, youthful appearance.
