Before your first visit
To better serve you, here are a few things you should know before your initial visit.
Where will my appointment be?
Dr. Rao’s dermatology office is at the Alberta DermaSurgery Centre.
How do I get to my appointment?
The Alberta DermaSurgery Centre is easy to reach by car, taxi, bus and LRT. If you live close by, walking and biking are also great options. You’ll find the exact address on our contact page.
When should I arrive, and how long will my appointment last?
Please arrive about 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment. If you are not sure when your appointment is, call the Alberta DermaSurgery Centre at 780-437-7189 to check.
Dr. Rao and his staff always try to stay on time, but some patients need more time than others, so it is hard to predict exactly when you will be seen. The time needed to diagnose, discuss and manage your problem is also unpredictable. In our experience, though, an initial consultation (from entering the door to leaving) should take well under 30 minutes in total. Follow-up visits and procedures may be shorter or longer, depending on your condition, the area of the body and the complexity of any treatment.
What should I bring to my appointment?
When you arrive, you will register as a patient of Dr. Rao. To do this, you will need:
- Photo identification
- Your Alberta health care number
- Your full contact information
To help Dr. Rao with your dermatological problem, please also bring:
- A complete list of your current medications (or, better yet, the medications themselves)
- An accurate history of when the problem began, how it has been treated, and any other health issues, including allergies
- If possible, digital images of the problem at its worst
The visit itself is covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Some products and procedures are not covered, but could be reimbursable through medical insurance, so please bring a form of electronic payment (such as a credit or debit card) in case you wish to purchase these items or services.
How can I make the most of my time with Dr. Rao?
Dr. Rao is a very kind, compassionate and patient person, but he is also an extremely popular and busy specialist. Out of respect for all of his patients, and to make sure everyone is seen and their concerns managed, Dr. Rao will give you as much face-to-face time as you need, but it can go by quicker than you wish.
To make the most of your time with him and to be sure all of your questions are answered, consider writing them down before your visit. You may also want to write down Dr. Rao’s thoughts and suggestions during your consultation. If you run out of time or have more questions, another appointment can be arranged.
How can I prepare for my appointment?
Dr. Rao will need to see the areas of concern directly, so you may have to undress to show the exact sites involved. Please wear clothing that allows an efficient examination and any treatment you may have. If your face is involved, please be prepared to remove makeup, powder or other products that may affect Dr. Rao’s ability to assess your skin properly. You may wish to bring these products with you to reapply after your visit.
Dr. Rao and his team look forward to seeing you soon.
