Teledermatology

How referrals work

A referral from your doctor or nurse practitioner is required.

If you live far from Edmonton or are too unwell to travel, your doctor or nurse practitioner may be able to ask a dermatologist for advice about your skin without you making the trip.

How it works

  1. Your doctor or nurse practitioner takes photos of your skin and writes a short history.
  2. They send these through ConsultMD, a secure online teledermatology service.
  3. A board-certified Canadian dermatologist practising in your province reviews them and sends advice back to your doctor or nurse practitioner.
  4. Your doctor or nurse practitioner goes over the advice with you. If you need to be seen in person, they can refer you.

There is no video call. The dermatologist reviews the photos and history and replies to your doctor or nurse practitioner later.

Is it right for me?

Your doctor or nurse practitioner requests a teledermatology consult. Patients can’t book one themselves. Ask your doctor or nurse practitioner whether it suits your skin problem.

For health care providers

ConsultDERM™ is now ConsultMD™. ConsultDERM accounts and past consults do not carry over, so you need to create a new ConsultMD account. The account is free, and ConsultMD is for licensed health care providers only.

For help with ConsultMD, see consultmd.com. To refer a patient to be seen at our clinic, see referring a patient.

ConsultMD replaces ConsultDERM, the teledermatology service Dr. Jaggi Rao created, which began in 2008.
