The thinner skin on the face is usually the first place to show wrinkles, but it is not always the last. The skin on the chest can wrinkle deeply, which makes button-down shirts and dresses that show the décolleté a cosmetic concern.
Whether you love wearing low-cut shirts or just want to feel more confident in a sundress, chest wrinkles can be a big problem. Like facial wrinkles, chest wrinkling can come from the breakdown of collagen and elastic fibres, sun exposure and repeated creasing, which can be due to sleeping on your chest or side.
Fortunately, we have ways to reduce the appearance of chest wrinkles, including treatment options that are both effective and non-invasive.
What causes chest wrinkles?
The causes of wrinkles anywhere on the body typically fall into two categories.
Environmental factors
External factors that harm the skin, such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, dehydration and, most importantly, sun exposure. The sun’s damaging UV rays harm healthy cells, and the more sun exposure you get, the faster premature aging takes hold.
Age factors
We gradually lose collagen and elastin as we grow older. The body no longer makes any elastin after puberty, so this loss eventually affects the skin’s appearance. Connective proteins help keep the skin firm and in place; as they age and weaken, the skin sags and wrinkles form.
Factors that can deepen lines
A few circumstances unique to the chest can deepen lines, because the chest has a very different role from other wrinkle-prone areas like the face and neck. Chest wrinkles can be due to:
- Push-up or sports bras. These bras squeeze the breasts together and promote wrinkles. Wear a bra that lets your breasts rest comfortably and does not press them together.
- Large breasts. Women with larger or augmented breasts are more likely to see wrinkles in their cleavage, because there is more breast tissue and the breasts are more likely to form wrinkles between or above them.
- Sleeping on your side. When you normally sleep on your side, your breasts lie to one side and wrinkles form between them.
Treatments for chest wrinkles
At Rao Dermatology, we have several treatment options that remove imperfections and tighten this delicate skin by stimulating new collagen. They range from microdermabrasion and chemical peels for the neck and décolletage to a range of laser treatments, all of which return the décolletage to a more youthful appearance.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. The needle pokes the skin to create a micro-injury. This not only stimulates collagen but also creates channels that let serums infuse deep into the skin.
The serums can be platelet-rich plasma or effective anti-aging solutions that contain growth factors and hyaluronic acid to combat aging even further. Plumper skin, filled-in fine lines and scars, and improved discolouration are all achievable with microneedling.
Chemical peels
Our chemical peels are advanced, non-surgical cosmetic SkinCeuticals treatments that can start your journey to healthier, more youthful-looking skin. Without downtime, these customized, medical-grade peels exfoliate and stimulate the skin to improve a variety of conditions, including hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, and many other concerns. We can improve the appearance of your skin with results that give off a smoother, more radiant glow.
Intense pulsed light (IPL)
Intense pulsed light is a photorejuvenation treatment that focuses mainly on irregular pigmentation, sun damage, and discolouration or brown spots on the surface of the skin or face. A broad spectrum of light passes through a small, smooth, transparent handpiece placed gently over the skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range, so it can be optimized for different applications and skin types.
The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed either by the blood, when treating vascular lesions, or by the melanin, when treating pigmented lesions, damaging them. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance.
